DSL Tournament Coaches

Good Morning:

We are working on schedules for the May 20th DSL Tournament and they are almost ready to be sent out.  Below is a current listing of what I have as teams and coaches for the tournament, grouped by school, then grade, in alphabetical order.  Absent an email from you to the contrary, I went with coach's names from the regular season.  I understand that these may have changes (or that schools may have entered more or less teams than they had in the regular season) so I made a few assumptions that might not be correct.  Please review and let me know if there are any changes to the coaches names by Friday, May 12, 12:00pm.  That will allow me to get the schedules to you all by end of day tomorrow and then to the printer for the tournament boards.  After that time I won't be able to alter the names (but it wouldn't preclude a school from still playing even if the coach's name didn't match).
Also, as a reminder, in addition to the tournament registration fee, every school must turn in a team roster the day of the tournament and prior to the start of their first game.  Players are only allowed to play for one team and if they play for more than one team the teams will have forfeited.  The only exception to this is with respect to the girls tournament where we allow 4th grade girls to play up on the JV teams and JV girls to play up to Varsity for the Girls Tournament.  Please reach out with any questions if there is any confusion on this.
Thanks,
Rob

DSL – Final Tournament Count – Registration is Closed

Coaches:

Thanks for getting back to me with your team registrations for the Developmental Tournament and All Girls JV/Varsity Tournament that will take place this Saturday, May 20 in two weeks.  Registration closed yesterday and below is the final list of teams that have registered.  More information will come out shortly, but I will spend the next week or so creating the schedule with the goal to get a final schedule out to everyone by the end of day, Sunday May 14th.
As a reminder, attached are the rules for the tournament, which each coach should read.  Also, team rosters (form attached) need to be submitted the day of the tournament when you check in (one for each team) and team payment should be paid in cash so we can use it to pay tournament day costs ($125 per team) the day of as well.  It simplifies things if the coordinator or the coach of the first scheduled game pays for all the school's teams at one time.
Lastly, school tents are allowed, but please check in at the registration tent prior to setting up so we can make sure you set it up in the right place.  Last fall we had to have a few schools move their tents because they set them up in places that were not permitted.
Thanks and let me know if you have any questions.

Peak Sports Camp .jpg
Good morning all:

Just a few notes as we head into week 8:
1. This weekend's games – It looks like the weather may finally cooperate this weekend.  Please do your best to play all games and get those remakes in.  For JV/Varsity especially look to weekdays if needed as time will run out and the last day to get games played and uploaded is Sunday, May 28.
2. Developmental and All Girls Tournaments – This Friday (May 5th) is the last day to register for the May 20th tournament.  Registrations received after then may not be accepted if scheduling has already occurred.  At this time I have enough Girls JV teams registered to do a 5v5 JV girls tournament with Holy Cross, Mary of Nazareth, Sacred Heart and St. Kilian, but more schools are always welcome.  On the Varsity side we only have two schools registered – Holy Cross and Mary of Nazareth.  We need at least two more Varsity 5v5 teams to register to make that tournament happen.  If you are trying to register but are a few kids short, let me know, I can put you in touch with similarly situated schools and allow for a combined team if necessary.  Also, at this point I have received registrations from the following schools, if your school is not listed and you'd like to participate in either the developmental tournament or all girls tournament, please reach out to me prior to this Friday:
  • Ave Maria
  • Blessed Trinity
  • Guardian Angel
  • Holy Family
  • Holy Sepulcher
  • Mary of Nazareth
  • Alpha
  • Sacred ♡
  • St. Bede
  • St. Kilian
3. Off Season Training Opportunity – Please see below and attached for an opportunity for some off season soccer training if you are interested:
Hello, and Happy Friday.

I am reaching out to local schools and athletic associations to spread the word about my soccer training company, Peak Sports Pittsburgh. I have worked with a number of athletes from your association before and I'm hoping to expand my reach and help even more local athletes.

I offer private 1-1 training, small group training, as well as instructional clinics for soccer players of all ages, from our “Little Peaks” program for ages 3-6 all the way up to my athletes currently competing at the NCAA collegiate level. The next clinic is scheduled for Sunday May 21st. We will have clinics similar to this every month throughout the summer, and private training is available year round.

I have attached flyers for my May 21st clinic, as well as promotional flyers with some private training info. Here is the link to my website for additional information, such as coaching profiles, specific training opportunities, and parent testimonials.: https://peaksportspgh.wixsite.com/peaksportspgh

You can also find us on Facebook (Peak Sports Pittsburgh) and Instagram (@PeakSportsPGH).

Is there a way to get this information in front of your soccer parents?

Thanks in advance, I look forward to hearing back from you.

DSL – Week 6 Email

Good afternoon,

Just a few things as we enter Week 6, and while we made it to week 6 before having to send this email, I was hopeful that we would make it all sense, nonetheless, here we are:
1. Parent Conduct – Coaches, please remind parents that they should also be acting in a “Christ-like manner” while watching the games.  I am getting reports of parents verbally attacking the referees and opposing players during some games.  It goes without saying that this is not the behavior that should be witnessed by players, and referees or field monitors reserve the right to ask people that are acting in such a manner to leave the premises.  By all means cheer and root for your teams, but please keep it positive and be a good example to the kids that are playing.
2. Injuries – Injuries happen, the game is a physical game and accidents happen. None of us want injuries to occur to any player on the field and we as coaches should do everything within our ability to limit them.  This includes calling off the field one of your players that is intentionally fouling others and have a discussion with them about expectations.  However, coaches should not be yelling or speaking to another team's players in any situation.   If you as a coach believe that another player is being reckless or intentionally fouling, the appropriate course of action is to respectfully bring that issue to the referee or opposing coach's attention.  Bear in mind that your perceptions may be different than the referees or other coach's perceptions so inaction on their part does not give you license to address any issues with opposing players on your own.  If there are problems that are not being addressed, let me know of them.  I do track these things behind the scenes and if I see patterns emerging I will reach out on my own  and separately to the coach/soccer coordinators that are involved.  Also, if an injury occurs that necessitates hospitalization or a doctor visit, please remember to fill out and return to me an accident report form.  That form can be found on the web page under our forms page – https://pittdsl.org/forms/
3. Games –   We are about halfway through our JV/V season and a little over halfway through our developmental season.  I know that as of last count roughly 1/3 of the JV/Varsity games have been played (65) and there are 95 games that still need to be played between now and the end of May.  Once those games are played, please remember that the winning team (or in the event of a tie, the home team) needs to upload the game cards and results to the website for the game to be counted.  Here is a link https://pittdsl.org/report-score/ .   Also, from time to time, please check and make sure that the scores were correctly uploaded so that when playoff determinations are made, they are made with the most accurate information.  Teams can check their game results by clicking on the following link – https://pittdsl.org/results/
That's all from me, hopefully the weather will shift a bit for us all and we can get some of these games in and played this weekend.
Rob

DSL Week 5 Email

All:

Just a few things as we enter into Week 5 of our season:
1. Fall DSL Tournament Registration –  Registration is officially open for the Developmental Tournament and all girls tournament.  I am asking each soccer coordinator to let me know how many teams and at what bracket that they are registering.   This Fall's Tournament will be Saturday May 20 at No Off Season Sports in Russellton.   Registration will remain open until Friday, May 12 and then it will close.  We will take registrations for the following brackets, 5v5 1st grade, 5v5 2nd grade,  5v5 1/2 grade, 7v7 3rd grade, 7v7 4th grade, 7v7 3/4 grade, 5v5 JV All Girls, 5v5 Varsity All girls.  As always, if we fill up (and we tend to fill up at the younger age levels), preference is given to those schools that register first.  After May 12, any registrations are considered late and may not be allowed if scheduling is already complete.  Attached are the rules for the tournament (please read these, almost all past issues at our tournaments could be 100% avoided if coaches read and know the tournament rules.  The first question I will ask you when an issue arises is whether or not you read the rules).
2. Make up Games – I know that the first couple weeks of the season were rough and I know that conflicts do arise throughout the season.  If a cancellation occurs for whatever reason the requirement is for teams to reschedule that game within 1 week of the cancellation.  It doesn't need to be played within one week, just scheduled.  Otherwise what will happen is that a larger percentage of games will go unscheduled until mid-may and everyone will try at once to get them in which results in all sorts of logistical issues including team availability, field availability and referee availability.  At the JV/Varsity level, unplayed games could result in forfeits be assessed and at a minimum will negatively impact you in team standings and your ability to participate in the post season.
3. Summer Soccer Camps – See the attached for an opportunity for next years rising 1st through 8th graders to participate in a soccer camp hosted by North Catholic Soccer Players and Coaches the mornings of June 13-15.

IMG_F8DDA75935B3-1.jpeg

Thats all from me, have a great week on the pitch.

DSL – Easter Week Email

Coaches:

Nothing pressing in this week's email, just a few housekeeping items and an idea to bounce off you all for next spring:
1. Games/Make Up Games – No Games this Weekend for the Easter Break, please remember to make up any cancelled games from the last couple of weeks and for the game winners at the JV/V level, to post your results and a picture of the game card to the website as soon as the game ends (if its a tie the home team should post).  If you don't post to the website, you won't get credit for the win and that will impact your ability to qualify for the postseason.  Here is a link to the posting site-  https://pittdsl.org/report-score/
2. DSL Tournament – As a reminder, next Friday, April 15th, registration for the DSL Developmental and Girl JV/V Tournament will open.  For Developmental it is co-ed and is either 5v5 (for first and second grade) or 7v7 (for third and fourth grade).  For the All Girls JV/V it is 5v5.  Registration is open until Friday May 5th, but it is first come first serve and as many of our brackets had 16 teams, I expect some to fill up fairly quickly.  Please coordinate your registrations with your soccer coordinator and send them to me in one email so I don't get registrations for the same team from multiple people and double count them.
3. Updated contact list – another week, another updated contact list – This one reflects changes to the BTA Varsity Coach in the 7's league
4. Thoughts for Next Spring – As you have all witnessed this season, as well as previous seasons, trying to get games in early in the season is a challenge at best.  In week 1 no school that played on grass fields were able to get games in.  In Week 2, only one school was able to play on grass fields.  As a scheduler, this is tough situation–  I can't push the season up earlier and I can’t push the season back any further without shortening the season or making an already jammed pack schedule even worse, and the consensus from talking to people is that they think our season is already too short compared to other diocese sports and aren't interested in shortening it more.
So that leaves us in our current situation of scheduling games for late March/early April knowing that there is a good chance those games will need to be rescheduled.  We do try to get turf fields utilized in the early part of our season as much as possible, but most schools play on grass.  In assessing this situation over a few beverages last friday evening as the rains came down, I realized that if we can't control the weather, and if shortening the season or backloading the season weren't ideal options, perhaps we can revisit where we play some of our games early in the season.  Specifically, the idea that I wanted to float by you all is what if we considered having some of our week 1 (and possibly week 2) games on a turf field?  My thought would be that for any school that was interested I can leverage our numbers and our contacts to rent some turf fields for a day or two.  I can have one field set up for 1/2 grade games and one field set up for 3/4 grade games and, if we wanted, either of those fields could be used for JV/V games.  Market rates for field rental vary a bit, from $75 an hour to $500 an hour, but I think I can easily get some ideal setups in the $100-150 range per hour.  At the JV/V level we'd pretty much have one field per one game for around 1 hour.  At the 3/4 grade I can try to organize it so up to 3 games happen simultaneously and at the 1/2 grade level I can try to organize it so up to 4 or 5 five games happen simultaneously.  We would take those costs and divide them up amongst the home teams playing (I wouldn't charge any premium on the fields, but the costs would have to be paid by the home field teams since they aren't free, it could result in getting the developmental games in at a cost of $25-50 a game with some luck). Home team would also be responsible for paying for refs and at the developmental level you can bring your own refs or I could arrange to have some there and you can pay them. I wouldn't do this all season, just in week 1 or 2, and no one is mandated to use it, it just adds a little more certainty and avoids the inconvenience of having to reschedule.  Aside from the cost, some of the negatives are you'd lose one truly “home” game since you'd be playing at another field.  The benefits though would be having some certainty with the early season games and avoiding the hassle of having to make up games.
Also, if anyone has a line on free turf fields that we could use for the same purposes for a day or two, that would be even better.  I'm just looking for a way to help you all get your games in because I know how frustrating it is to have to try to fit the reschedules in.  Think on this and let me know your thoughts.  No action needed on this now, but I do think it's worth looking into for next spring.  It probably comes down to whether the cost and inconvenience of playing on another turf field early in the season outweighs the inconvenience of having to reschedule games later in the spring.  This doesn't affect me as much as it affects you all, but if you think It could be helpful, I am willing to help coordinate.
Thanks, and best wishes to you and your families for a blessed easter.
Rob

DSL – Week 2

All:

A few things as we had into week 2:
1. Attached is, fingers crossed, a final coach's contact email.  This is mostly the same as the one sent before except for updates in contact information to the St. Kilian White team in the First Grade bracket and to the Sacred Heart teams in the Third Grade bracket.
2. NCA Home Field Update – In the First and Third/Fourth Grade Bracket, North Catholic Assumption Home Fields are now:

Brighton Heights Field #1
600 Brighton Woods Road
Pittsburgh, PA 15212

Home Game times for first grade are 1pm (this affects Archangel Gabriel, Blessed Trinity and Holy Cross) and for the 3/4 grade they are at 2 pm (this affects Blessed Seelos, Holy Sep White and South Hills Catholic).

3. Weather- it is not looking pretty again for this weekend.  As we mentioned, please make sure to notify opposing teams ASAP if fields are unplayable and reschedules need to occur.
4. Reschedules- Those should get made up within one week of cancellation.  At the JV/Varsity level I can tell you that the schedule gets very crowded as we head into April and May.  Games that don't get played put you at a disadvantage for qualifying for playoffs.  There is no pro-rating so unplayed games will count against you.  Get those make ups in as soon as possible so your post-season isn't decided by an unplayed game.
That's all for me, good luck this weekend and lets hope the weather gives us a reprieve.
Rob Glentzer
DSL Commissioner

DSL – Updated Contact List and Reminders for this Weekend

All:

As a reminder, please reach out to each other on game info, especially this week as the weather forecast looks challenging.  I know many grass fields are already saturated and with tonight's forecast calling for another 1/2 inch of rain and an additional 1/4 inch tomorrow, many grass fields won't be playable.  As a reminder, we can play in the rain if the field conditions are not dangerous and there is no lightning.  Any game on turf should be fine, ones on grass fields will vary field by field.  Check your grass fields today, and if they are already unplayable go ahead and reach out and start the rescheduling process as things won't get any better between now and tomorrow (or sunday).
Also, to that end, attached is what I believe to be the final coach's contact list, which contains the following updated information:
  • Updated Coach information for Blessed Trinity in the First Grade Bracket
  • Updated Coaches information for the two Mary of Nazareth teams in the First/Second Grade Brackets
  • Updated Coaches information for the two Carlow teams in the First/Second Grade Brackets
  • Updated Coach information for the Mother of Mercy White team in the Third/Fourth Grade Bracket
  • Updated Coach information for the Archangel Gabriel team in the Third/Fourth Grade Bracket
  • Updated Coach information for Ave Maria in the 7's JV Bracket
Good luck this weekend to those that are able to get their games in.
Rob

DSL – Week 1 email

All:

1. Some Game Day Procedures.

  • Home teams should be reaching out by Wednesday (or 2 days in advance for weekday games) to away teams to confirm game times/locations/jersey colors/venue specific rules.  Away teams, if you haven't heard by Thursday (or 1 day before for weekday games) Please reach out to the Home team and cc me.  If no contact is made feel free to reach out to me directly.  This pregame contact is necessary to make sure everyone is on the same page in advance.
  • As we head into this weekend of soccer, please pay careful attention to field and weather conditions.  I don't expect those playing on turf to have any issues, but the cooler temperatures and rainy forecast could cause some field conditions later in the week.  If you are able, get the games in.  Making them up can be very challenging.  As a reminder, we can (and should) play in the rain.  Games should only be cancelled if the fields are unplayable or too dangerous, or if there is lighting.  Otherwise dress appropriately and embrace the challenges of playing spring soccer in western PA.
  • If you have determined that games are not playable such a decision must be made by the home team at least two hours in advance, preferable at least 4 hours though.  That decision should be made by the soccer coordinator, athletic directors, field/facilities coordinator or the delegate and they should be consistent across your program/facility.  Decisions to close a field for one team and not another, or decisions for a team to cancel while their facility otherwise are not allowed and can subject that team to forfeits at the JV/Varsity Level.
  • Also, remember, once the decision to cancel is made it is the home team's responsibility to notify the home team and soccer coordinator as well as the referees.  For JV/Varsity teams and developmental teams that are using the PIAA referees, if you fail to timely notify Chuck of a referee cancellation, your team is still responsible for the referee fees for the games that they were supposed to officiate.  Chuck should be notified via text if it's less than 48 hours from game time or email if there are more than 48 hours from game time.  His contact info is in the coaches contact list.
2. I had some minor schedule updates and they are reflected in the attached.  From this point forward I will not update this schedule.  Changes made at the developmental level can be made amongst the coaches as needed (making sure to notify Chuck of any referee changes for his crew) and the same can be done at the JV/Varsity Level (but keep Chuck and I both in the loop on those changes).  We will also have the JV/Varsity Schedule on the webpage.
  • First Grade – Week 5 – BFS opponent for its home game is now St. Kilian White
  • First Grade – Still awaiting final field location and time for Northside Catholic Assumption
  • Third Grade – All Aquinas Home games are 1pm
  • Third/Fourth Grade – Still awaiting final field location and time for Northside Catholic Assumption
  • JV/V MLS – Carlow's Week 1 games against GAA and South Hills Catholic are being rescheduled per the email for those two teams.

  • I still need coach information from Mary of Nazareth for your two 1/2 grade teams and from Ave Maria for you JV 7's team.  Coaches, until I have that contact info, please coordinate directly with the soccer coordinators and Julie and Stan, until you identify coaches, please coordinate with the coaches in those brackets for game week info.
Thanks all, that's all I have.  Good luck this weekend and if you need anything feel free to call me on my cell– I'd normally just post it here, but I have been reminded that these messages post to the webpage and having my cell number on the web isn't the best idea, but you can find all of my contact as well as our webmaster and our referee coordinator all in the attached contact list.
