Fwd: DSL – Last Week of Regular Season Games

All:
At this point I have enough games uploaded to be able to determine and share next weekend's Tournament Schedule that will take place at Seton LaSalle High School.  To the extent that games are scheduled, but not yet played, please ensure that those games are played  as the whole point of doing this season after season is so the kids can get touches.  Also, the below schedule is subject to change if a forfeit is assessed.  Assuming that that is not the case though, I have attached three things to this email:
  1. The Tournament Schedule – email me and confirm that your team will be able to attend. If you fail to confirm by end of day Sunday your playoff spot may go to another team that is able to make it
  2. Tournament Rules – read through these so you will be prepared for the tournament
  3. Form of Tournament Game Day Roster (bring three to each games completely filled with your player names, numbers and grades and ensure that no player is on your roster that isn't eligible)
Other than the above, the only thing needed to be brought would be the $150 registration fee (one time fee, payable in cash prior to the start of your first game to offset tournament day costs) and pinnies/change in uniform just in case they are needed.  Note that the higher seeded team is the home team and can wear dark (on my schedule the higher seeded team is in the left hand column) lower seeded team should wear white.  If your team only has one uniform you must bring pinnies with you in the event that your jersey color is too close to the opposing team. The DSL will provide all game balls.
That's it, let me know if you have any questions, and remember to confirm your attendance.

Real quickly I want to thank everyone that came out this past Saturday for the DSL tournament.  Despite the rain, it was a great event.  I'll send out more details on the tournament results in the end of season email.
Moving onto this week and next week.  For those that have games this week please remember to upload your game cards immediately.  I am working on the schedule for next weekend's Playoffs but I still have a few game pairings that will be decided by games played this week.
Over the next 24 hours please review the standings on the webpage (dslpitt.org).  Things look generally correct from our end, but if you notice an error with anything on the standings, please notify us ASAP as I expect to be able to circulate playoff pairings and game times as early as tomorrow evening (depending on how quickly all of you are uploading your game cards).
Generally speaking we will play playoff games next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  JV 7's will play Friday (with their championship on Saturday) and all other teams that qualify will have their play in games on Saturday and championship games on Sunday.  We don't have much flexibility on game days and times so I will ask all teams that qualify to confirm that you can play once the schedule is circulated (If you are missing a few kids I wouldn't sweat it too much, this time of year all the teams lose a few to early vacations, other sporting events and other commitments in general).
Aside from confirming your availability, the only other thing that we require each team to bring are 1) registration fee of $150 per team (one time fee, payable in cash so we can use it to offset game day expenses and you do not pay it again on day 2 if you advance) and 2) three copies of your game day rosters completely filled out with players names and numbers.  This will need to be brought again on day 2 if you advance.  I'll circulate playoff specific ones early next week.
One note on rosters, JV can have 4th graders play up and Varsity can have 5th and 6th graders play up.  If your school has multiple teams that advance in the playoffs please note that JV teams in one bracket cannot play for other JV teams and Varsity teams in one bracket cannot play for other Varsity teams.  Players that play up need to be listed on the roster and you should not have players playing up if you have 4 or 5 subs already without them playing up.  Doing so results in three things that we don't like – 1) diminished playing time for your grade appropriate players, 2) difficulties/distractions for coaches and DSL officials with an excessively large bench, and 3) the real possibility of me running out of medals for the other teams if teams decide that this is a great opportunity to squeeze everyone on the team to get a medal.    As a general rule we don't expect 7v7 teams to exceed 15 players and we don't expect varsity teams to exceed 23 players.  Please manage your bench appropriately in this regard.  And to avoid confusion, if your team has been larger than that all year long due to whatever reason, don't cut players for this game, I usually have plenty of medals in reserve for that scenario as I know what your roster sizes are.  What I am trying to avoid though is the artificial team inflation by having players play up when it isn't needed from a number perspective.
Also, and I believe every coach on this list knows this, there is no stacking any team with players who are not on your roster prior to the start of your 4th game.  If any team is found to be playing players in violation of this rule it is ground for immediate forfeiture of the match.
I don't expect any of the above to cause any issues and I look forward to another great event to cap off our season.  let me know if you have any questions and I'll be in touch soon.

Rob

last minute reminders for DSL Tournament.

All,

A few last minute reminders that will help tomorrow’s tournament go more smoothly-
  • Each field will have a black bench and a blue bench.  Home team should sit on black bench and the away team should sit on the blue bench.  This will make it easier for the refs and field marshalls to know which team is which and ensure scores are recorded correctly.
  • Bring pinnies – in the event that the two opposing teams jerseys are too close in color the away team is required to change jersey colors or wear pinnies.
  • Away teams start with the ball at the beginning of the game, there is no coin flip.
  • Here is a link to the tournament webpage, where standings will be updated as they come in. http://pittdsl.org/tournament
Look forward to seeing you all tomorrow.

DSL Tournament Reminder

Coaches:

Just a few reminders as we head into the tournament this Saturday:
1. Prepare for the weather.  Current forecast has the day being a little cooler and a little rainier than what we are used to for the Spring Tournament.  Team tents are allowed in the designated area, and dry socks and a spare set of dry cleats is never a bad idea with rain in the forecast.  As long as there is no lightning, all games will go on as scheduled and if there is lightning we will have a delay until any danger has passed.
2. Two big things that each coach needs to have ready to go are team rosters and the registration fee of $125. Both are needed to be handed into the registration tent prior to your first game.   We recommend checking into the registration tent at least 30 minutes prior to your first scheduled game.
3. Be mindful of the facility rules and remember no picnic styler set ups are permitted and neither are pets.  Attendants will stop you from bringing pets or food into the venue (beyond small snacks, etc they can fit in a six pack sized cooler). The venue has a couple of places available to grab food and beverages as needed too.
4. Be early and ready to go for your games.  We have 133 games to get in one day.  The schedule is aggressive and teams that are not ready to go won't fare well. We don’t have time to wait for late teams as it would wreck the entire day’s schedule. if you aren’t there in a timely manner, a forfeit will most likely be assessed and we will move onto the next game.
5. Tournament standings will be manually kept at the registration tent and can be followed by scanning the tournament QR code at the tent.  Once your three play-in games are complete, check in to see if your team has advanced to the semis and/finals. if we can’t find you and you are not at the field for your scheduled playoff game you will forfeit.
6. Sportsmanship- please have your team exhibit it.  After you are up on a team by 4 goals, pump the brakes.  nothing over a 4 goal differential counts towards standings or tie breakers. If the goal differential exceeds 7 goals inquiries will be made and we reserve the right to set aside the results of that game.   In other words, if you find yourself beating a team by 8 or more goals during the course of a 20 minute match, don’t be surprised if you don’t get credit for the win.
7. Lastly, have fun and make sure the kids have fun.  The point of the tournament is to let the kids celebrate a great season of soccer and have fun. Winning (or losing) is secondary, if not tertiary.
If you have any questions during the day stop by the registration tent and we will do our best to help you along.

DSL – Tournament Email, including Rules and Schedule

All:

This next Saturday, May 20, will be the day of the Developmental and All Girls JV/V Soccer Tournament.  The Tournament location is at the No Offseason 904 Little Deer Creek Valley Rd, Russellton, PA 15076.  I have attached a few things that should make your day go more smoothly if you are participating in this year's tournament.  They are as follows:

1. Tournament Spreadsheet.  The Games, Bracket and Points, Game Times Sorted by School, and Layout Tabs will be most helpful to you.  Note that in the Layout tab this spreadsheet is not to scale for any of the fields, but the general location will be accurate.  All registered teams are expected to know their schedule, arrive at the games on time, and stick close to the event tent after the end of your bracket's play in games if you are close to making the semi finals/finals.  All Developmental Games will have semifinals and championship games.  The JV and Varsity Girls Tournament will only have championship games.

2. Tournament Rules – A lot of time has gone into the preparation of this tournament.  We do insist on having each coach read these rules and we ask that you share them with your families as well.  Most of all issues that arise during the tournament can usually be attributable to someone not knowing the rules.  Take a couple of minutes to familiarize yourselves with them, it will make Saturday go much more smoothly for all of us.  Some of the common ones that have caused confusion in the past are:  (i) Offside – remember is that offside calls will be made at all age groups (though at the first and second grade levels the referees have the discretion to only call major violations (i.e., cherry picking),  I recommend that first and second grade games that play this weekend have their referees enforce obvious offside calls so that the kids get a little exposure to this rule in advance of the tournament, (ii) Punts – No punts from the keeper at all levels, (iii) Indirect Kicks – at the developmental level  no direct or penalty kicks are awarded, all infractions that normally would result in direct or penalty kicks are instead indirect kicks, (iv) Sportsmanship – There is a maximum goal differential of 7 goals per game.  In a 20 minute game every coach should have enough discipline of his or her team to keep a game within 7 goals.  Violations of this rule will be reviewed and the Tournament Director reserves the right to set aside game results for infractions of this rule.  Finally, please share these attached rules with your parents.

3. Form of Team Roster – Please bring this and the registration fee to the DSL Tent for each team prior to the start of your first game.  Schools can have one person drop off all fees and registrations, but each team should still check in with the tent so that we know you are here.

Also, please note the following:

Registration Fee. Tournament Registration fees are $125.  Unless alternative arrangements have been made with me prior to the event, payments should be made in cash prior to the start of your fist game so we can use those funds to offset game day expenses (I won’t have time to go and cash checks during the tournament).  I can provide receipts upon request.

Arrival.  Remember to arrive at the fields at least 30 minutes prior to your first game to allow adequate time for parking, registration, and organizing your team.  If you are late to the field for your pending game time you will most likely forfeit that much.  We are organizing and coordinating around 133 games throughout the day.  Our schedule won’t allow for reschedules so if you are not there on time, we won’t be able to wait, and the game will be registered as a forfeit.

Parking.  It will be a busy day at the venue.  In addition to the 75 teams we have playing there, there will also be a baseball tournament going on as well.  When parking, in no event should you block someone in, you may find your vehicle towed if you do.  If by chance there isn't a parking space readily available, drop off your player and wait for a spot to open before parking, we have teams rolling in and out all day and there should be an employee of the venue to assist as needed.  I know it can be frustrating, but not nearly as frustrating for the other person who is now boxed in.

Tents and Food.  The venue will permit schools to set up team tents in the orange shaded area that surrounds the fields (but that is not adjacent to the main walkway).  Tent space is limited, is on a first come basis, and they should not be set up on the turf.  Check in with the registration tent prior to setting up your tent so you can avoid being asked to move it later on.  All tents must be anchored down.  The venue is not allowing outside food or beverage and is asking attendees to use the concessions that are available.  Personal items such as water bottles and food that can fit in a six pack cooler is permitted, but they are no longer permitting tailgating in the tents so items such as pizzas and other food spreads are not allowed.  If we do not adhere to this rule we will no longer be allowed to have schools bring tents to the event and we could lose the field as a tournament option.

No pets. The venue does not permit pets at the facility and you will not be allowed entrance If you bring one.

Other Venue Rules are as follows:

No coolers larger than a 6-pack cooler are permitted

No grills or propane heaters are permitted

No sunflower seeds or peanuts are permitted

No alcohol or tobacco are permitted

No outside food is permitted at the venue

    Loudspeakers and radios are prohibited

No double parking vehicles in the parking lot

That's it, let me know if you have any questions and I'm looking forward to a great event.

Regards,

Rob Glentzer

DSL Tournament Coaches

Good Morning:

We are working on schedules for the May 20th DSL Tournament and they are almost ready to be sent out.  Below is a current listing of what I have as teams and coaches for the tournament, grouped by school, then grade, in alphabetical order.  Absent an email from you to the contrary, I went with coach's names from the regular season.  I understand that these may have changes (or that schools may have entered more or less teams than they had in the regular season) so I made a few assumptions that might not be correct.  Please review and let me know if there are any changes to the coaches names by Friday, May 12, 12:00pm.  That will allow me to get the schedules to you all by end of day tomorrow and then to the printer for the tournament boards.  After that time I won't be able to alter the names (but it wouldn't preclude a school from still playing even if the coach's name didn't match).
Also, as a reminder, in addition to the tournament registration fee, every school must turn in a team roster the day of the tournament and prior to the start of their first game.  Players are only allowed to play for one team and if they play for more than one team the teams will have forfeited.  The only exception to this is with respect to the girls tournament where we allow 4th grade girls to play up on the JV teams and JV girls to play up to Varsity for the Girls Tournament.  Please reach out with any questions if there is any confusion on this.
Thanks,
Rob

DSL – Final Tournament Count – Registration is Closed

Coaches:

Thanks for getting back to me with your team registrations for the Developmental Tournament and All Girls JV/Varsity Tournament that will take place this Saturday, May 20 in two weeks.  Registration closed yesterday and below is the final list of teams that have registered.  More information will come out shortly, but I will spend the next week or so creating the schedule with the goal to get a final schedule out to everyone by the end of day, Sunday May 14th.
As a reminder, attached are the rules for the tournament, which each coach should read.  Also, team rosters (form attached) need to be submitted the day of the tournament when you check in (one for each team) and team payment should be paid in cash so we can use it to pay tournament day costs ($125 per team) the day of as well.  It simplifies things if the coordinator or the coach of the first scheduled game pays for all the school's teams at one time.
Lastly, school tents are allowed, but please check in at the registration tent prior to setting up so we can make sure you set it up in the right place.  Last fall we had to have a few schools move their tents because they set them up in places that were not permitted.
Thanks and let me know if you have any questions.

Good morning all:

Just a few notes as we head into week 8:
1. This weekend's games – It looks like the weather may finally cooperate this weekend.  Please do your best to play all games and get those remakes in.  For JV/Varsity especially look to weekdays if needed as time will run out and the last day to get games played and uploaded is Sunday, May 28.
2. Developmental and All Girls Tournaments – This Friday (May 5th) is the last day to register for the May 20th tournament.  Registrations received after then may not be accepted if scheduling has already occurred.  At this time I have enough Girls JV teams registered to do a 5v5 JV girls tournament with Holy Cross, Mary of Nazareth, Sacred Heart and St. Kilian, but more schools are always welcome.  On the Varsity side we only have two schools registered – Holy Cross and Mary of Nazareth.  We need at least two more Varsity 5v5 teams to register to make that tournament happen.  If you are trying to register but are a few kids short, let me know, I can put you in touch with similarly situated schools and allow for a combined team if necessary.  Also, at this point I have received registrations from the following schools, if your school is not listed and you'd like to participate in either the developmental tournament or all girls tournament, please reach out to me prior to this Friday:

3. Off Season Training Opportunity – Please see below and attached for an opportunity for some off season soccer training if you are interested:
Hello, and Happy Friday.

I am reaching out to local schools and athletic associations to spread the word about my soccer training company, Peak Sports Pittsburgh. I have worked with a number of athletes from your association before and I'm hoping to expand my reach and help even more local athletes.

I offer private 1-1 training, small group training, as well as instructional clinics for soccer players of all ages, from our “Little Peaks” program for ages 3-6 all the way up to my athletes currently competing at the NCAA collegiate level. The next clinic is scheduled for Sunday May 21st. We will have clinics similar to this every month throughout the summer, and private training is available year round.

I have attached flyers for my May 21st clinic, as well as promotional flyers with some private training info. Here is the link to my website for additional information, such as coaching profiles, specific training opportunities, and parent testimonials.: https://peaksportspgh.wixsite.com/peaksportspgh

You can also find us on Facebook (Peak Sports Pittsburgh) and Instagram (@PeakSportsPGH).

Is there a way to get this information in front of your soccer parents?

Thanks in advance, I look forward to hearing back from you.

DSL – Week 6 Email

Good afternoon,

Just a few things as we enter Week 6, and while we made it to week 6 before having to send this email, I was hopeful that we would make it all sense, nonetheless, here we are:
1. Parent Conduct – Coaches, please remind parents that they should also be acting in a “Christ-like manner” while watching the games.  I am getting reports of parents verbally attacking the referees and opposing players during some games.  It goes without saying that this is not the behavior that should be witnessed by players, and referees or field monitors reserve the right to ask people that are acting in such a manner to leave the premises.  By all means cheer and root for your teams, but please keep it positive and be a good example to the kids that are playing.
2. Injuries – Injuries happen, the game is a physical game and accidents happen. None of us want injuries to occur to any player on the field and we as coaches should do everything within our ability to limit them.  This includes calling off the field one of your players that is intentionally fouling others and have a discussion with them about expectations.  However, coaches should not be yelling or speaking to another team's players in any situation.   If you as a coach believe that another player is being reckless or intentionally fouling, the appropriate course of action is to respectfully bring that issue to the referee or opposing coach's attention.  Bear in mind that your perceptions may be different than the referees or other coach's perceptions so inaction on their part does not give you license to address any issues with opposing players on your own.  If there are problems that are not being addressed, let me know of them.  I do track these things behind the scenes and if I see patterns emerging I will reach out on my own  and separately to the coach/soccer coordinators that are involved.  Also, if an injury occurs that necessitates hospitalization or a doctor visit, please remember to fill out and return to me an accident report form.  That form can be found on the web page under our forms page – https://pittdsl.org/forms/
3. Games –   We are about halfway through our JV/V season and a little over halfway through our developmental season.  I know that as of last count roughly 1/3 of the JV/Varsity games have been played (65) and there are 95 games that still need to be played between now and the end of May.  Once those games are played, please remember that the winning team (or in the event of a tie, the home team) needs to upload the game cards and results to the website for the game to be counted.  Here is a link https://pittdsl.org/report-score/ .   Also, from time to time, please check and make sure that the scores were correctly uploaded so that when playoff determinations are made, they are made with the most accurate information.  Teams can check their game results by clicking on the following link – https://pittdsl.org/results/
That's all from me, hopefully the weather will shift a bit for us all and we can get some of these games in and played this weekend.
