DSL – JV Varsity Pairings and Playoff Schedule

Below are the teams that qualified for the playoffs this weekend at Seton LaSalle.  Also attached you will find the playoff schedule, game day roster, and rules.  A few notes:
  1. Confirmation of Games.  If your team qualified for the playoffs you need to respond back to me with Saturday (and potential Sunday) game times and confirm that you can make both your scheduled games.  As is always our policy, if you cannot attend your game time, there will be no rescheduling, we will go to the next highest seeded team and adjust our games accordingly.  Respond no later than the end of day tomorrow (Tuesday November 2) and let me know if you can attend or not.  Also, I am fully aware that this is a long day Saturday and some teams will play earlier or later than they may otherwise like.  Scheduling issues this fall prevented us from spreading out the Playoffs over 3 or 4 days like we have done in the past, so we will be playing 12 games this Saturday.  It’ll be a long day, but no one will have a longer day than me, I will be there for all 12 games to make sure things run smoothly.
  2. Registration Fee and Game Day Cards.  All teams will need check in at least 15 minutes prior to their scheduled game times with two items: (1) their registration fee of $135 dollars per team (note a slight $5 increase over last season since each bracket has 3 playoff games instead of 2, with the difference covering the extra cost for the three referees that we use in the playoff matches).  This fee should be in cash to cover game day costs that will be paid that day (receipts are available if needed)  and (2) three game day rosters in hand, one for me, one for the opposing team and one for the referees (see attached for form).  This roster should match your regular season roster.  Playing players who were not on your roster will result in a game forfeiture.
  3. Jerseys.  Lower seeded teams will be away teams and should wear white.  Higher seeded teams will be the home team and will wear dark colors.  In the event that both teams’ jerseys are too similar (as determined by the commissioner), lower seeded teams should have pinnies on hand to wear.
  4. Rules.  The rules are attached.  Please read them.  I was slightly disturbed by the fact that a few coaches this past weekend at the developmental tournament were not aware of the rules.   As a coach you should know the rules to give your team every possible advantage.  They are attached and they are not that lengthy, read them.
  5. Parking – all players, referees and coaches are to park in the lower parking lot and walk up the hill to the field.  The only exceptions are those with handicap plates and they are permitted to use one of the few handicapped spaces at the top of the hill.  Do not use those spots unless you have the handicapped plates, failure to strictly comply may result in your vehicle getting towed and/or ticketed as emergency vehicles need to be able to access the field.
  6. Concessions.  Seton LaSalle boys and girls soccer will be running a concession stand for our convenience.  Please utilize it if needed.
Thanks and let me know of any questions, below are the playoff standings (game times are in the attached word document)

DSL – Weekly email – Following up on Saturday’s Tournament and looking ahead to the JV/Varsity Playoffs

Good afternoon everyone,

I just wanted to follow up on two quick items:
1. JV/Varsity Playoffs.  Today is the last day to get your JV/Varsity Soccer matches played and uploaded.  Immediately following your game please upload the scores.  Several playoff matches will be determined by today’s games so I can’t do anything until those results are uploaded.  If I get all of the results in this evening I will try to get you all out the Playoff Schedule by the end of the day tomorrow.  If I don’t receive them all this evening that timeline will be set back.
2. Developmental Tournament – Thank you everyone for coming out yesterday for our end of season developmental and all girls tournaments.  We had a record number of teams register for the fall and thanks to a lot of great volunteers we were able to get all of the games relatively on schedule.  It was great to see so many kids out there having fun and playing soccer on what ended up being a surprisingly dry day.  A few things to follow up with you on tournament-wise:
  • Let me know your thoughts on how the day went, what worked well and what could use a little more refinement.  Each season we get this a little more fine tuned but there is always room for improvement.  I’m particularly curious about your thoughts on the venue and the new 7v7 format for the 3rd and 4th grade teams since both were new to this season’s tournament.
  • If we decide to use this venue again there are a couple items we as a league will need to improve upon:
    • Parking  I would have thought it went without saying, but we cannot allow our parents to triple park people in.  We had 7 or 8 families stuck for a few hours because some people couldn’t be bothered to not park them in.  I personally went and checked out the situation, and while the lot was very full I did see many spaces open farther away in the lot.  Please be mindful of this next time.  If it happens again the venue will make us hire staff to park cars and that cost will increase tournament registration fees across the league;
    • Post game clean up.  We were allowed to set up our tents and watch the games from the turf.  This is the same turf that other teams have their games and practices on throughout the week.  While cleaning up post tournament it quickly became apparent that numerous tents left uneaten chips, cookies, sunflower seeds, and other garbage on the turf (and as a reminder, sunflower seeds were not permitted at all).  This resulted in me and my son personally spending an extra hour or so on the fields on our hands and knees picking them– needless to say, my day started early and I was on the road at 5am to set up– ending the day by picking up peoples leftover garbage, sunflower seeds and crumbs is not how I expected to end it.  I am left with one of four options:
      • (1) Ask (and receive) everyone’s cooperation in the future to not allow this to occur again,
      • (2) not book large turf venues like this in the future,
      • (3) forbid the use of team tents and forbid spectators from being on the turf,
      • (4) increase registration fees to hire someone to come in and clean up after us.  My preference is to go with option 1 and ask that for future tournaments each school be responsible for making sure that every bit of food is off the fields near and around them.  If that doesn’t work out though I’d need to resort to one of the other three options.

That was it on my end, overall the day went great and if we can do a little better on the above issues, I think we will be in great shape going forward.

DSL – Some last minute tournament items

Coaches:

Some last minute items as we get ready to head into what looks like a wet tournament weekend:
1.  We will play, rain or shine.  While it does look like it could be rainy at times we are fortunate in that the temperatures will not be dipping.  One the off chance that the venue shuts down its fields I’ll let everyone know, but they have assured me that their turf has excellent drainage and can handle this weekend’s weather.
2.  Bring two colors of pinnies for your team, one for your keeper to wear and one to wear in the event that your jersey’s clash with the team you are playing. In the event that both teams’ jerseys are too similar to play (as determined by the referee or tournament director) the away team is obligated to change into pinnies or different jerseys.  If that is not possible the away team risks forfeiting the game, so bring your pinnies and have them ready.
3.  I will have benches for teams to sit on.  Home teams sit on the black bench, away teams sit on the blue bench.  Bring a few towels to dry off the benches if you want as I am almost certain that those benches will get wet.
4.  There will be wind on Saturday and most likely there will be some rain.  Remember tents are allowed only if they are adequately weighted down.  You may not stake the tents into the turf.  That will result in a very expensive bill for your school and a brand new turf field for our venue.  In addition see my earlier email on other venue rules (no coolers larger than a six pack cooler, no grills, no heaters, no pets, etc.).
5. There will be a concession stand at our venue and bathrooms (as opposed to porta potties) that we have access to.
I’ll be working on setting up the fields on Friday so I may not be responsive via email.  If there are questions that arise between now and Saturday feel free to text or call me.

Revised DSL Tournament Schedules

As a follow up to my email earlier today, attached is a revised bracket, and barring the correction of a typo or two that may have slipped by, this schedule is now final.  No additional teams will be permitted to be added and any team that needs to withdraw will still be responsible for the registration fee and those games will result in a forfeit for the withdrawing team and the remaining team would get the win and a 4 goal differential plus a break in their game schedule.  It is not my intent to have to deal with any other teams withdrawing, but at a certain point the train has to leave the station and we have reached that point.  So that is our contingency plan if any further changes arise.
4th Grade Coaches, please review this schedule and communicate the revised times/locations to your team.  Because of the butterfly effect triggered by removing one team, a rework of both 4th grade brackets was needed; it is highly unlikely you are playing at all the same times and all the same fields as the earlier schedule indicated.  I can understand that some of you may have liked the match ups or game times from the earlier schedule better, but please bear in mind that this change was prompted by a change in teams in the division, which necessitated the attached reformulation; so requests to revert to the previous schedule cannot be accommodated.
All other grades, your schedule was unchanged by the revisions I made earlier today.
Also, for fourth grade, here is a pdf of your game times and fields for easy reference.
Thanks and let me know if there are any questions!

DSL Schedule change to 4th grade Tournament

All:

There will be an updated spreadsheet circulated shortly to reflect a change to the 4th grade tournaments.  Generally the time slot for the 4th grade tournament will be unchanged, but your individual game times, field locations and opponents may change.  I will send that out to the group ASA, but I wanted to give you a heads up now.

DSL Tournament Schedules and Information Email

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone this Saturday, Oct 30 at the No Off-season facility located at 904 Little Deer Creek Valley Road, Russellton, PA 15076.  We will be playing on the two turf fields in the back of the facility.  It will be a busy day and we will be running a record high of 9 fields throughout the day to accommodate all of the teams that wished to participate in this end of season event.

This email contains a lot of information for the tournament.  Please read it all.  Also please forward to any new coaches that may be taking the helm for just the tournament and are not on the regular season distribution list.  This email also contains several important attachments including:

  • Excel document containing a bracket tab and a game tab.  These tabs contain bracket info, coaches info (to the extent received)/team/school name, game times and fields.  Please plan on arriving at least thirty minutes prior to your first game to get checked in and be at your field at least 15 minutes prior to your designated start time.  Failure to be at your game, ready to go will result in you receiving a forfeit loss. For standing purposes such losses will be scored as 0-4 and the forfeiting team will receive 0 standing points for that game and the other teams will receive 3 standing points.

Also, every coach needs to review your game times/locations and email me your team’s time and fields so we can confirm that you are good to go.

  • Word document containing a blank team roster.  Every team must hand in their completed team roster and their $100 registration fee per team prior to their first game (if I haven’t received this fee from you yet, please bring in cash the day of and i can get you a receipt if needed)
  • Word document containing the tournament rules.   Please read and familiarize yourself with the rules. Note that the build out rule is in effect for the developmental brackets, that all scoring must occur on the offensive side of the field, goalkeepers are not permitted to punt, that offsides will be called for 3rd grade and up and that at second grade and below we will generally be more lenient, but that we will call obvious “cherry picking” types of offsides at those age levels.
  • pdf of the field layout

Based on the registrations we will have the following brackets, there will also be an awards ceremony for the champion and runner up at the DSL tent immediately following their championship game:

First grade – 14 teams, 4 brackets, winner of each bracket advances to semifinals and then those winners advance to the championship game.

Second grade – 14 teams, 4 brackets- the winner of each bracket advances to semifinals and then those winners advance to the championship game.

First/Second grade – 5 teams, 1 bracket – the top two seeds in this bracket advance to the championship game.

Third grade – 12 teams, 4 brackets- the winner of each bracket advances to semifinals and then those winners advance to the championship game.

Fourth grade – 11 teams, 2 brackets- the top two seeds in each bracket advance to semifinals and then those winners advance to the championship game.

Third/Fourth grade – 10 teams, 2 brackets- the top two seeds in each bracket advance to semifinals and then those winners advance to the championship game.

JV Girls – 4 teams, 1 bracket – the top two seeds in this bracket advance to the championship game.

Varsity Girls – 4 teams, 1 bracket – the top two seeds in this bracket advance to the championship game.

All scoring will be tracked at the DSL Tent which will be located in the middle of fields 5 through 8.  Additionally there will be a webpage where results are updated:  https://pittdsl.org/tournament/

If you haven’t sent me coaching info yet, please send that to me by the end of day Monday.  I have filled in the excel doc with all coaches info that I have received to date and am missing information for quite a few teams from the following schools at this point: Aquinas, AGS, Ave Maria, MAry of Nazareth, St. Bede, and St. Kilian.

Remember to read the facility rules and share them with your players/parents.  All tents must be weighted down appropriately (but not staked, that is not permitted).  If tents are not weighted down you will have to take them down and there is a chance of rain that day.  Also no pets are permitted, no grills are permitted and no coolers larger than “six pack” coolers are permitted.

As I mentioned above, there is a chance of rain that day.  We will play rain or shine so please dress appropriately for the weather.  Good luck everyone and let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you all this Saturday.

Regards,

Rob Glentzer

DSL Weekly email

Good evening DSL coaches, soccer coordinators and diocesan athletic directors:

Just a few things I wanted to follow up with for everyone:
1. Build out rule – I have had a few reports that our build out rule is not being uniformly enforced.  This rule applies to first through fourth grade play. Our most current rules are attached for reference, but it seems that the confusion circles around the differences between goal kicks and when the keeper stops the ball.  In both instances the attacking team is to retreat to the build out line.    When the keeper stops the play and has the ball in hand, attacking players have to stay behind the build out rule until the keeper puts the ball into play.  Once the ball is in play attacking players can advance.  During a goal kick though, attacking players cannot advance until a defender touches the ball.  Please make sure that your coaches, players and referees understand this rule.  It will be in effect for the tournament so it is in everyone’s best interest to get used to it now.
2. Developmental Tournament.  Below is a current listing of team registrations (each school should review and confirm that this is accurate).  I have heard from all current teams except Ave Maria, St. Monica and South Hills Catholic – if those teams plan on participating please let me know soon, as several brackets are almost filled.  Based on current registration numbers we plan on having 8 separate brackets (1st, 2nd, 1/2, 3rd, 4th, 3/4, JV girls and Varsity Girls),Please note that this is entirely dependent on us maintaining atlas 4 teams per bracket and that the if a few teams dropped off at the 1/2 grade, JV girls or Varsity girls there is a risk that those brackets get cancelled.  Also I have attached a form of player roster and the tournament rules.  On the day of the tournament each team needs to submit their signed player rosters for that team and their $100 registration fee per team.  We ask that those fees are in cash so that we can use them to day same day costs such as referees, field rental, trophies, etc.  Typically it is easiest if each school designates the person with their school’s first game of the day to pay those fees and submit the rosters as both need to be in hand 30 minutes prior to your first scheduled match.  Feel free to contact me with any questions on the rules, some changes from the past years include the facility specific rules regarding tents, coolers, etc., the increase in field size and format for 3rd and 4th grade matches (now a 7v7 format; 1st, and and the all girls tournament remain 5v5), and the softer offsides rule for 1/2 grade where just the obvious cherry picking (as solely determined by the referee) will be called.

Week 4

Evening everyone, I hope everyone had a great weekend of games during this abnormally sunny and warm September week/weekend of soccer.

Just a few notes as we go into Week 4:
1. Game Format, as a reminder, the league format for regular season games is as follows:
  • First and second grade matches – 5v5 (4 on the field and a keeper).  If a team is short players you should make sure that it is a fair contest by playing down, sharing players, etc.
  • Third and fourth grade matches – 7v7 (6 on the field and a keeper).  If a team is short players you should make sure that it is a fair contest by playing down, sharing players, etc.
  • JV/Varsity matches – 11v11 (10 on the field and a keeper).  There is no requirement to play down if another team is short (but coaches have the option to do so if they want to or if the game is getting out of hand).
2. Developmental (boys and girls) and the All Girls JV/Varsity tournament registration is open.  Some grade brackets are starting to fill up so I would focus on registering sooner rather than later.  As a reminder, I am time stamping registrations and preference for the tournament acceptance goes to those that register first.  In the event that a bracket is filled up prior to your registration that team may be waitlisted and there is a possibility that they don’t get to compete that day.
3. Remember the pre-game contact with the opposing coaches.  For the most part it appears to be happening, but I know of a couple instances where it hasn’t.  I know from first hand experience that it is far better to shoot a quick email to the opposing coach and confirm game details instead of organizing your entire team to show up at the wrong venue, wrong time or wrong day (or wearing the wrong jersey color).  I’d ask everyone to be responsive and diligent on this as schedules sometimes change or get inputted into the spreadsheet or webpage incorrectly.  Consider that the final quality check to ensure that your game is going to happen.
4. Also, for JV/Varsity, remember to upload the game cards to the webpage as soon as you can, often it is easiest to just snap a picture after the game and upload it then.  That ensures you remember to get the game cards from the ref as well as ensuring that you don’t forget.  It also keeps our league tables current.  If you forget, I may not always have time to remind you and if too much time passes then your game may not count for standings and that could impact your playoff implications.
That is all, I hope you all have another great week on the pitch and don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Regards,
Rob Glentzer

Week 3

Good morning, as we head into week 3 of our season I had just a few quick items to share with you all, they are as follows:

1. JV/Varsity Score reporting – We are two weeks in and all games played have been reported online, thank you for that, it makes all of our jobs easier. If you have any issues uploading the scores, please let Bob or me know. We have had a few minor issues pop up that we are working on fixing, thanks for letting us know of the glitches when they occur.

2. End of Season Developmental and All Girls Tournament Registration – Registration is open for the developmental tournament. Please send me the teams that you would like to register and I will time stamp the entries (so far I have received entries from SKS and AGS). In the event that a bracket fills up before the registration deadline of 10/15, the teams that were registered first will have priority. As a reminder we will try to have the following age brackets 1, 2, 1/2, 3, 4, 3/4, JV Girls, Varsity Girls. In the event that I do not have enough 1/2 and 3/4 grade teams, those teams will play in the 2 and 4 grade bracket respectively. For the All Girls teams please note whether you are fielding a JV squad, a Varsity squad or a mixed squad. If we do not have enough teams to do a JV and V bracket separately for the girls we will combine those brackets as we have done in the past.

3. Rule Correction – Deep in the rules you will find the build out line rules. One correction there, it states those only apply to 3 and 4 grade. The build out rule should also apply to the 1 and 2 grade teams as well. Typically those smaller fields do not have a separate build out line and instead use the midfield line as the build out spot. Please let your coaches, players and refs know about the build out rule and that it applies to all of developmental soccer (but not to JV/Varsity).

4. Updated contact list – I’ve sent a further revised contact list that has a change to the Aquinas third grade coaches and a correction to the Referee Coordinator contact email. At this point I am not aware of any further corrections so this list should be considered final (hopefully).

Thanks and I hope everyone has a great week of games,

Rob

Fall 2021 regular season notes

As we prepare to start our regular season this weekend I do have some reminders:

1. Communication. Please reach out to the opposing team to confirm playing times, locations, jersey colors (Home is Dark, Away is Light), and COVID regulations of the home field, if any. For those of you playing this weekend, the Home team should have initiated conversation, if they have not, the Away team should reach out on Thursday. If COVID events or weather events necessitate reschedules please let everyone know with as much notice as possible. Remember, if the fields are still safe, we can play in the rain, home team makes the call on field conditions up until the start of the game. Once the game has started the referees make the call on game conditions. If you are playing on turf though, generally rain is not a reason to cancel a game unless it is accompanied by thunderstorms with lightning.

2. No Mandatory COVID Playdown Rules. Mandatory COVID playdown rules are not in effect for JV/Varsity. If a team shows up short you may play down, but you are not required to at the JV/Varsity level. If a developmental team doesn’t have enough players work with the other team to ensure some parity, whether that involves reducing your players on field or lending the other team a few of your players each half. The goal at the developmental level is to get everyone touches, develop skills, and have a fun time while doing so.

3. Sportsmanship. A lot of time was spent trying to get the brackets as even as possible. That being said, there will probably be some times this season where you find yourself mismatched either to your advantage or disadvantage. If you find yourself up on a team early, switch some players around and have them play where they are not as strong yet (its great development for them), adjust the style of the game and play possession, shoot with your non-dominant foot, play a man or two (or more down), or if the referees permit it, allow the other team to add a player or two. There are other score mitigation solutions discussed in our rule book as well that might be helpful. If you beat a team by 8 goals or more the game and the circumstances will be reviewed. If we feel that a pattern is emerging or that even absent a pattern, a team is not exercising good sportsmanship, the league reserves the right to set aside wins that have a goal differential of 8 or more. Remember, at the JV/V level, goal differential is capped at 4 goals per game so anything over 4 won’t count come playoffs

4. Referee Fees. At the JV and Varsity Level each game will have two Referees at the Referee’s fees are $45 per referee per game, payable by the home team. In the event that only one referee shows up, the game should proceed with the one referee and two linesmen, one from each team. Coaches should pick linesmen that can be fair and impartial, have a basic knowledge of the game, can call a ball in or out, and ideally some understanding of the offside rule. This does not occur often, but if it does, its better to get the game in than to have to try to reschedule. If no referees show up please call me and/or the referee coordinator on our cell phones. One of us should answer and we will try to figure something out. This has never happened yet, but it is good to have a plan in place in case it does.

5. Rescheduling Requirements. Remember, the schedule last circulated is the schedule. If you need to reschedule the following should occur: 1. Notify the other team of the issue, cc: the referee coordinator (only for JV/Varsity or if you are using PIAA referees at developmental), the Webmaster and me on the request (that contact information is in the coach’s contact sheets). If the request is less than 48 hours you should also phone the referee coordinator (only for JV/Varsity or if you are using PIAA referees at developmental) and the opposing coach. For JV/Varsity or if you are using PIAA referees at developmental, if it is too short of notice or you don’t follow the above procedures you may still be responsible to pay the referee fees regardless of whether the game is played. 2. Both teams need to agree on a date and time. For JV/Varsity or if you are using PIAA referees at developmental, once that is established, notify the referee coordinator (only for JV/Varsity or if you are using PIAA referees at developmental), the Webmaster and me and obtain the referee coordinators sign off. If you do not obtain the referee’s sign off please reach out to me, as you cannot assume that everything is fine without their signoff. At both the Developmental level and the JV/V level, all games should be played. Refusing to travel to a team to play can result in league imposed sanctions (see earlier email for more details on this topic). For JV/Varsity games all games must be played by 10/31 in order to count for standings. If you are having difficulty having another team agree to a reschedule, please let me know, I will assist in the effort. Ultimately, unplayed games will either be a non-score or a forfeit, depending on the circumstances involved.

6. Team Rosters. Please remember to turn the Team Rosters, they are due Friday.

7. Website. I will let you all know once our website is updated for the fall season. As a reminder, our web address is https://pittdsl.org/

8. Developmental and All Girls JV/V Tournament and JV/V Championship Series (A/K/A Playoffs). I will have some tentative information on the Postseason DSL Play here shortly. Please keep 10/30 for the Dev. Tournament and All Girls Tournament as a placeholder and 11/6 and 11/7 as a placeholder for the JV/V Championship Series. I am finalizing some details there but hope to get you all information within the next week.

That is all for me, good luck to the teams that start their season this week and for the rest of you, enjoy the Labor Day weekend and good luck the following week.
